new drawings..

Been listening to lots of inspiring music lately. Mostly old stuff, but it’s keeping me drawing. Late night drawings pictured above. Worked on some in Illustrator this morning..

I’m thinking this is going to lead to some sort of finalised tattoo design in the future. I am still so fond of ink on paper that doing things digitally seems to make me feel more detached from my work. I’m working on something larger than I’ve ever done before and it’s kind of intimidating, but in the best way possible.
spring twigmobiles

Cutting coloured paper is fast becoming something I am very good at. Especially with my handy circle cutter (thank you Martha Stewart). Making twigmobiles like a madwoman, and hoping, to somehow work with new materials. After a recent conversation, I am thinking that I could try using gels that people use for lighting. They’re super thin and come in a myriad of colours. Now.. to find a way to get my hands on some!
pod beginnings..

Five more patterns, five more sets of narwhal bodies. I need to buy more stuffing because all my stash of recyclable stuffing has been depleted! Also need more grey felt. I’m a bit anxious to get these all sewn, but first, tusk trials. I was having all kinds of crazy thoughts about how they should be constructed. I definitely need some sort of tusky skeleton inside the felt. I was thinking about using a thick paper board, but then I was thinking maybe even a small wooden rod would work. Will have to see what will work best with the curly effect that I really like now.
awaiting and editing

bee & bean weekend..
- over 400 photos shot for stop-motion animation
- peppermint tea x’s 4
- french-pressed coffee
- super instant coffee which resulted in a night of insomnia
- three blankets
- layers of clothing
- rain for three days
- playing vinyl for inspiration
- macaroons eaten: 4
- homemade pumpkin soup
- trips to the grocery store: 2
- Green Beans Coffee shop show
- Clouseau the Cat being CUTE
- granola breakfasts
- sleep under the sea
- characters used in animation: 10
- hours spent shooting: approximately 9
- hours spent editing: approximately 5
- days spent enjoying creation station: 4
I’m so excited about getting the animation all ready for public viewing. It’s going to take a while to tweak everything, but given the fact that both Emily and I have never done this before, I have to say we did pretty dang good.
drawing exercises

Since I tweaked my back during yoga, I’ve been exercising my right hand by drawing every morning. The page my sketchbook is open to is a page full of ideas for new creatures. Creatures that will be mobile and featured in upcoming movies (hopefully). My tiny budget and time allowing, I should be able to post new stuff next year that will hopefully open new doors for me.
Also, job hunting again, is really unfun.
paint
I made these diptychs years ago. Matte black 1shot + glossy white 1shot on plexi. Why I haven’t painted in years is really no mystery. Working a job that takes up most of my day and not having time/space/money to put into painting are hindrances that I should overcome if I’m as passionate about painting as I say I am. But, sometimes, the process is so much harder than the creation.

I’m determined to get back into it. Ideas are already germinating, waiting to sprout. I am going to give them a little time. Wait and see..

Good afternoon!
Emily and I are happy to announce that we will be posting to ONE blog instead of two separate ones so you can keep up with both of us in the same place.

October Update

Tender Loving Empire revamped their website and it is looking mighty fine! Our dolls in a basket at their shop! They have so many awesome goods there. Next time I’m in Portland, I’m bringing home goodies!
My friend PS so graciously took these photos for me during his Pacific NW Sigur Ros tour!

He also purchased Rene and Chapman! What a stand-up fella! They are in the best hands now.
Emily has updated her site with new dolls and we’re going to be working on a new series starting this weekend. Very excited for this. There are so many things to be looking forward to this new season! We will be trying to get our dolls into more shops for the holiday season.
Hope everyone is doing well!

Tender Loving Empire

Hello!!
Quick updates: Emily is back in California for a little bit. Bee & Bean will be alive and live very soon this month! I just landed a new job so I’ll be starting that as well this week. Exciting times I tell ya!
We are also very proud that our dolls will be sold at a super awesome shop in Portland called Tender Loving Empire. One of the proprietors, Brianna, met Emily at the PDX Zine Symposium and invited us to sell our dolls there! We are so excited about this as the TLE family promotes not only artists but musicians and writers as well. Definitely our kind of people! Please show your support and visit TLE when you get a chance! Also, their website lists a lot of the events they participate in, so you can check that out here: www.tenderlovingempire.com.
Hope everyone had an awesome summer! Looking forward to fall and cooler temps here..

Wax & Wane

Summer has been good. Beach parties, bonfires, cookouts, trip to the aquarium.. fun in the sun. Doll making was put on hold for a bit, but I am back in full force. I am working on bats and hopefully a new character in the Seafarers line-up.
Emily and I are hoping to get a table at the PDX Zine Symposium at Portland State later this month.
Shop!
Our Bee & Bean shop is finally up and running. I’ve listed six dolls today. We will be updating the shop and our sites as soon as we get some more of these little guys made.
Thanks to everyone who came out to Last Thursday. Your purchases and support mean a great deal to us and we appreciate it very much! We cannot wait to see you again!

Some of the new guys to be added soon. Stories to follow!!
